My essay argues that Marvel restricts female representation and feminine heroism to what remains desirable under patriarchal forms, and that these visual conventions shape younger audiences’ understanding of femininity as something tied to physical attractiveness or sexual availability. The investigation is done through the analysis of the mise-en-scène in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, focusing on Black Widow and Gamora as primary case studies. The paper concludes that female power in the MCU remains visually regulated through narrow aesthetic forms and highlights the need to reimagine mise-en-scène in future superhero films to enable more inclusive and transformative representations of female heroism.
